5. Getting Religious (or simply keeping an open mind)

In the 1800s, Christian missionaries introduced Christianity to the Tongan islands and it has stayed as the dominant religion. Strong religious influence can be felt, as all activities cease early on Saturday nights to make way for the sacred Sundays. On Sunday, all shops (except bakeries that open for ½ day) are closed and people goes to church (the minority escape to visit nearby island resorts like me).

There are three major Christian groups in Tonga, namely the Roman Catholic, Free Wesleyan and Mormon. Although I hold a different religion, I believe in keeping an open mind. Take time to visit some of the beautiful churches in town. Some are age-old architecture that reflects beauty in age, while other new structures are so pristine that they make a sharp contrast to their surrounding. You may also consider visiting the Church on Sunday to soak up the great atmosphere (which I can’t share since I didn’t visit).

6. Becoming a Sun (or Stars) worshiper

I didn’t realised that there is a term for my penchant to capture beautiful moments of sunrises and sunsets. Apparently, I am a sun worshiper. And I have been doing my best to capture as many sunrises and sunsets in Tongatapu.

As mentioned previously, the strategic location of Tonga makes it possible for one to catch the first sunrise in the world. One may do so at the eastern shores of Tongatapu (where the snorkeling pigs are!) or wait from afar at the wharf in the city center (lack of tall buildings make it possible for one to still catch the sunrise there).

As for sunset, there is no question that one should head West. I waited for my sunset at the Utukehe beach where I was staying, and the view was spectacular. Other great sunset sites that one may explore would be the Mapu a’Vaea Blow Holes, Ha’atafu Beach or Masi’ata Beach etc.

Certain parts of the islands do not have streetlights. Minimal air pollution also aided in clear, starry skies. Thus, if you are one who enjoys star gazing or taking star-trail shots, this is a great destination to do so!

7. A Different Nightlife

For more exciting activities at night, head on down to the local pubs (although it would be better to do so in groups/with locals). The night scene is a weird combination of mismatched music, brightly lit space (that reminds me of a coffee shop with pub music) and delicious beer.

Controversial characters roamed the streets and seem to have great fun; I know we had fun being the spectators. Tongans can be very expressive people and they certainly let down their hair when partying!

8. Visiting The Wharf

It seems that every destination has its “in” place to be. In Singapore, orchard road might be a popular choice. In Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, district one would be it. In Tongatapu, it has to be the wharf!

There are unlimited activities to be done here, at different days of the week and different time of the day! Catch a sunrise, jog, stroll, swim, chat or people-watch. Take your pick! On public holidays, Sundays or any special occasions (i.e. winning of the Rugby Cup), almost everyone will be out here getting in touch with nature and their companions. Life is leisurely.

A couple of days ago, I read a dated copy of National Geographic at a lovely lodge where I was staying. The author wrote this about villagers in Samoa, “They have the idea that nothing outside the village matters. In the village, all you need is the plantation and the sea… and forget about tomorrow, because tomorrow will be the same as today.”

The last sentence struck a chord in me, for that was what I encountered at Tonga. “Tomorrow will be the same as today”. Time still stood (or relatively) and it is this that defines the charms of this kingdom.
